3d printing for blind people.

During the “First International Workshop on “Low-cost 3D Printing for Science, Education and Sustainable Development”, the organizers presented several applications also for blind people.

Although some museums and public amministrations started to installing tactile maps (picture), they aren’t so common because of their high cost and low public resources.

Also, the recent trend of temporary expositions make these maps uneconomical.

If the metal panel is expensive, the alternative could be the plastic; with a 3D printer you can make specific maps, easy to edit and cheaper.

You can see an example in the picture below, where Gaia Fior shows a model.

The 3D printing makes possibile also to reproduce some objects that are usually protected by case and allows to touch them. In this picture there is an example of a skull

How to run Cura on Linux

Cura is one of the best softwares available now for slicing (as well as Slic3r), developed by Ultimaker. This software is for a variety of computing platforms and the setup is easy.

Unfortunately, although there is a .deb package for Debian based distribution, at the first launch of the 13.06.4 version, the 3d’s preview doesn’t work and this frame appears:

The problem is caused by the lack of Java’s libraries or by the obsolete version of them.

To resolve this problem, open up a terminal and enter the following command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java

sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer

After that, although 3D’s preview starts working, the G-Code’s export doesn’t work. This is a bug of 13.06.4 version, but the 13.06.5 version, released yesterday, works perfectly.

RepRap: how to make a hobbed bolt.

One of the fondamental parts of our 3D printers is the hobbed bolt, that drives the filament into the HotEnd; there are a lot of good ones on sale, but you could need to custom it, like me.
Obviously you should use a lathe with gear-cutting and a good bit to do it precisely, but I did it without these tools.
Let’s see how.
I took as an example some procedures that I found in this wiki.

Things you need:
-the extruder
-a drill press
-a dremel with some cut-off wheels
-a cylindrical file
-a Dremel Holder
-a bolt

You can start putting together the bolt, the big gear and the washer with the extruder.

Insert the filament into the extruder and mark the bolt like this:

Attach the bolt to the drill press and mill it between the signs with cylindrical file:

Print the dremel holder that you can find here:

If you use the Dremel’s flex shaft attachment you can also download this one.

Cut along the bolt grip at the milling; I suggest to use the gear teeth to obtain equidistant cuts.

Then drill between two theeth with cone router bit to obtain more cutting edge:
